1. 一般說來，用名詞放在另一名詞前作定語時，若被修飾的名詞為複數形式，作定語的名詞不能變為複數，如：a boy friend→boy friends 男朋友（不說boys friends），a bus driver→bus drivers 公共汽車司機（不說buses drivers），等。

但是man和woman是例外：當它們用於名詞前表示性別時，若其後的名詞為複數，man 和 woman 也要用複數，如：a man servant→men servants 男僕，a woman doctor→women doctors 女醫生。

2. 漢語說「男女」或「男男女女」，英語通常也說man and woman, men and women，但有時也可見到woman and man, women and men的說法。如：

The affix -man is used in a lot of words to indicate positions and occupations which today are filled by both women and men. -man這一詞綴用於很多詞中，所指的職位和職務今日男女均可充任。

下面一句使用woman and man 是為了與前面的lady and gentleman對應：

Lady and gentleman are used instead of woman and man to show politeness.

3. 泛指「男（女）人」或「男（女）性」時，通常用單數形式，且不用冠詞。如：

Woman lives longer than man in most countries. 在大多數國家，女人比男人壽命長。

God created man and woman for each other. 上帝為男人創造了女人，也為女人創造了男人。

但在現代英語中，也可用複數形式或用冠詞。如：

Men have more body hair than women. 男人的寒毛比女人的多。

A woman does not envy a man for his fighting courage, nor a man a woman for her beauty. 女人不會羨慕男人的勇武，男人不會羨慕女人的漂亮。

但是，用man表示「人類」時，一般不用冠詞。如：

Man will conquer nature. 人定勝天。

Man and the monkey have many things in common. 人和猴子有很多共同之處。

不過，有時也可用複數形式。如：

Man has [Men have] made history. 人創造了歷史。
